Respiratory diseases are a major and increasing global health challenge. Chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs), including COPD, Asthma, Tuberculosis, and various infections, are leading causes of disability and death worldwide. 

The total number of COPD cases globally is expected to approach 600 million by 2050, with the highest increase anticipated in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

India bears a significant share of global respiratory diseases. With an ageing population due to demographic shifts, the country faces health concerns like increasing chronic lung diseases.

Studies show an overall prevalence of 4.38% for Asthma and 2.1% for COPD among Indian individuals aged 45 years and above.

Environmental and lifestyle factors critically influence the rise in respiratory ailments. Rapid urbanisation and industrialisation have led to increased levels of indoor and outdoor air pollution. Chronic lung diseases like Asthma and COPD are associated with significant age-related complications, including functional geriatric syndromes such as limitations in Activities of Daily Living (ADL), Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL), and Falls.
